DESCRIPTION/EXPLANATION

OF VARIOUS TYPES OF

TOURNAMENT PLAY FORMAT

The CSGC Handicap Chairman will post all scores to

NCGA and CSGC Handicaps that are played in

 Home tournaments

THREE-HOLE SKINS

            SIX THREE-HOLE MATCHES
                TOTAL NET SCORE ON HOLES 1-3, 4-6, 7-9, 10-12, 13-15, 16-18

TWO MAN BETTER BALL

Partners choose the better ball net score on each hole. Normally*, the net is based on 90% of the players handicap for the course.   Players record their gross score on each hole in the regular manner. Tournament winning teams are based on the better ball net score of the partnership for 18 holes.

Players may select their own partner, but partners should be matched with reasonably close handicaps, e.g., the NCGA allows a maximum of 8 strokes difference in partner’s indexes for their official tournaments (Ref. to the NCGA Bluebook for details, format, rules, for official NCGA tournaments).

Players post their individual adjusted scores as usual

* Many clubs and the NCGA better ball tournaments use 90% of the players handicap for the course played - the intent is to make play more even since it is a partnership vs. individual play.

FOUR MAN BEST BALL

Same format as above except that the "team" is four players and typically "two" best balls are selected for tournament competition.

YELLOW      YELLOW BALL (Colored Ball)

Score Best Ball plus Yellow Ball. The yellow ball is passed and scored with the lowest Index on holes 1,5,9,13and 17.  Next lowest Index on holes 2,6,10,14, and 18.  Next lowest Index on holes 3,7,11and 15. Highest Index on holes 4,8,12 and 16. If a team is short a player skip that rotation and a blind draw will replace him.  Some tournaments require that the Yellow Ball be returned to the scorer for the team to be eligible for 1st place or to place in the tournament.

SCOTCH BALL   (Players alternate hitting each shot)

On the first hole of scotch play, the partners select a player to tee off on all ** odd numbered holes and the other partner then tees off on the even numbered holes. After the tee shot there is alternate hitting of each shot until the ball is holed

The handicap for the team, for the "scotch ball" holes, is typically the combined handicaps of the partners divided by 4.

Partners are usually paired by selecting one player from each of 4 handicap groups, i.e., A, B, C, & D (A is low handicap group ....D is high handicap group)

Scores are not posted when this format is played for all or part of a round

** See Razzle-Dazzle format below where more than one format is used in a tournament and special handling of team handicaps should be used for scotch ball holes.

RAZZLE-DAZZLE

This is a combination of formats, e.g., six holes each of Better Ball, Scotch Ball, and Scramble.

BETTER BALL HOLES: Use regular course handicap for each player.

SCOTCH BALL RULES: Handicap determined by dividing the total 18-hole handicap of partners by 4 and then taking a percentage of that, e.g., 50%, for the six-scotch ball holes.

Or:         NET SCORE BOTH BALLS: Use regular course handicap for each player.

SCRAMBLE HOLES; No handicap used; total of "selected” shots for each hole.

Partners typically paired by selecting one player from each of 4 handicap groups, i.e.,  A, D, C, & D (A is low handicap group  D is high handicap group).

Scores are not posted when this format is played

CHA-CHA & CHA-CHA-CHA

Cha-Cha and Cha-Cha-Cha are variations of better/best ball with 4 players as a team. Cha-Cha is the best ball on the first hole, with two best balls counted for score on the second hole, and continuing to alternate through the is holes. Cha-Cha-Cha is best ball on the first hole, two best balls on the second hole, three on the third hole, and continuing to alternate 1, 2, and 3 best balls through the 18 holes.

Cha-Cha results in accumulating team scores for 27 holes and Cha-Cha-Cha results in accumulating team scores for 36 holes, A consideration as to which format to play may be the hole numbers for the most difficult 2 or 3 holes on the course being played, e.g., if hole numbers 9 & 15 were number 1 and 2 handicap holes on the course being played and you are playing Cha-Cha-Cha, the gross totals per team should be higher than if playing Cha-Cha.

Players post their individual adjusted scores as usual

POINT PAR

Point Par is regular individual medal play except that "points" are assigned to the players net score on each hole and then totaled to determine winners - the goal being to obtain the highest number of points. The assignment of point values to the net score can vary as desired, however, they should not be even on the plus and minus side since that defeats the purpose of assigning points.

            [EXAMPLE: Eagle +6; Birdie +3; Par +1; Bogie -I; Double Bogie -2 or -3]

Players post their individual adjusted scores as usual

SCRAMBLE  [TWO-MAN OR FOURMAN]

Every player tees off and the best shot of the (two or four) players is selected. Every player then hits the second shot from the selected ball position, and this format continues until the ball is holed.

Typically, each players drive must be used at least two (2) times in 18 holes.

1]  Mark the location of the selected shot Then, each team member may place his ball within one club length of the selected shot, but no nearer the hole. If a selected shot is played from a HAZARD, SAND TRAP, ROUGH, FIRST CUT AROUND GREEN, ETC., again the ball may be placed within one club length of the selected shot, no nearer the hole, and must remain in the HAZARD, SAND TRAP, ROUGH, FIRST CUT AROUND GREEN, ETC.

2]  SAND TRAPS may be raked and the ball placed in the trap.

3] WHEN ON THE GREEN, you must place your ball within two inches of the selected shot, no nearer the hole. Teams are cautioned not to make tap-ins until all members have had the opportunity to attempt the team’s original putt. Once the ball is holed out, no further strokes count and teams should move to the next hole even though all players may not have had an opportunity to putt.

Partners typically paired by selecting one player from each of 4 handicap groups, i.e., A, B, C, & D (A is low handicap group C is high handicap group)

Scores are not posted when this format is played for all or part of a round
